Hi Everyone,
I was in Gurnee today. I went past the gates of SFGA on Washington Street and the ones on Milwuakee and on Grand Avenue.
The street (Great America Drive) was plowed, but the gates were closed. I could see the main entrance and the roller coasters as well as the Sky Trek Tower. There must be people who work there during the winter as there were cars in the parking lot way up by the main entrance. I could see part of the ticketing gates that we'll be going through in about four months.
I pulled over briefly near the Washington street entrance. If you look through the American Eagle you can catch a glimpse of the tubes of Wahoo Racer in Hurricane Harbor. Unfortunately that's about all you can see of the harbor from there.
It's always been a weird experience for me to see the park in the winter. When I lived in Gurnee and could see the park from the highway it was always hard to imagine that snow covered blob was the volcano in Skull Island. Sorry I don't have any pictures. I will bring a camera next time. Not that there's much to see from behind a locked gate in the winter!
It's hard to imagine now, but that frozen, bleak, desolate cold spot of today will be the warm, inviting, exciting place that smells like funnel cakes and delicious chicken tenders. With music blaring and excited screams of roller coaster riders! Just a hundred and fifteen days away from the opening day of the park. And a hundred and forty nine days away from the opening day of Hurricane Harbor!
If you go some other time, try seeing if you can find any track pieces. Just look in the easy places where it's okay to go; I'm not saying to anything illegal.
Hi,
I will try and see if I can see anything unusual in the lot. The problem is that you can only go so far as the gates that close the entrance to the parking area.
I suppose if I had a binoculars or something, I could see further towards the main entrance.
